In other news, Sam Roon of SkullsNBones.com recently conducted an interview with ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
SkullsNBones.com: "Khaos Legions" is easily recognized as a powerful installation to your impressive career and it's a testament to the quality and musicianship fans all across the world have come to expect from ARCH ENEMY. Awesomeness aside, what makes this album special for you?
Michael Amott: I think we delved deeper into our collective roots and also tried some new ideas and I believe we've produced one of our strongest efforts to date. The record is still pretty new and fresh, so I don't have a lot of perspective on it yet I do know I'm very proud of "Khaos Legions".
SkullsNBones.com: There's really something for everyone on "Khaos Legions", seasoned ARCH ENEMY fans and newcomers alike. What is it about your music that you feel makes you so accessible to new fans, yet keeps you aligned with the many metal elitists out there?
Michael Amott: That's great, but we don't set out to make "balanced" or "safe" albums We just simply write and what comes out naturally is what ends up on the record. Whatever we are into or feeling at the time dictates the direction and sound of each chapter of the band. Our records are always a little too extreme for the "mainstream" and not extreme enough for the deep underground. Consequently, we're a band that exists between those two worlds, and it's not a bad place to be! We have, as you said, a lot of fans in various camps and we can play in front of a lot of different audiences and pull it off.
SkullsNBones.com: The heavy music world often times pushes to have bands focus on elements other than the music, such as the exploitation of women for reasons other than their uniquely impressive talent. How does ARCH ENEMY combat these outside influences, and what advice would you give to those in a similar situation who might be conflicted with how to handle it?
Michael Amott: I am not the one to give advice. To us, it's always been simple. Angela [Gossow] is the lead singer of ARCH ENEMY and she does that very well, she has a unique voice and a huge stage presence. She also manages the band and handles our business affairs since 2008. Angela is very confident and strong. She breaks a lot of stereotypes and that might scare some people and make them feel insecure, that's not our problem. This is not a popularity contest this is fucking metal.
